Photojournalist briefly detained in Ethiopia

Police in Ethiopia's western region of Gambella on November 1, 2013, detained Robin Hammond, a freelance photojournalist with dual U.K. and New Zealand citizenship, while he was on assignment for U.S. magazine National Geographic, according to news reportsand local journalists.

Officers arrested Hammond in Gambella, accusing him of carrying more than US$4,000 without declaring the amount when he entered the country, according to the same sources. Ethiopian customs regulations require that foreigners entering Ethiopia declare any foreign currency in excess of US$3,000. In an interview with the U.S. government-funded international broadcaster Voice of America, Beth Foster, a spokesman for National Geographic Society, said Hammond was "briefly held in Gambella for a currency-related issue."

Customs officials detained Hammond for more than seven hours before releasing him after Anteneh Abraham, chairman of the government-controlled Ethiopian National Journalists Union, intervened, according to local journalists.

A few days later, authorities revoked Hammond's press accreditation. He left Ethiopia on November 18, 2013, according to the same sources.

Hammond had arrived in Ethiopia on October 30, 2013, on assignment to photograph commercial agricultural development in the country, according to news reports and local journalists. Local journalists believe his permit was revoked in reprisal for his efforts to speak to rural residents in Gambella about the government's leasing of land once occupied by small-scale farmers to multinational commercial agribusiness developers. The government's program of relocation of small scale farmers, officially intended to improve food security, has drawn controversy following human rights groups' allegations of abusive and coercive tactics against indigenous populations, which authorities have consistently denied, according to news reports.

Usman Bayu Tatago used to work for the Oromian Radio and TV organization (ORTVO) as a journalist. He worked as a producer and anchor of many entertainment programs. The government security personnel and ORTVO authorities were not happy with his programs, because of they focused on revitalization of the Oromo culture and history. Usman received a series of warnings, investigation, harassment and imprisonment by Ethiopian security men.

በጎንደር ዩኒቨርሲቲ በትምህርት ገበታው ላይ እያለ በወያኔ ታጣቂዎች በግፍ የተገደለው ወንድማችን ግድያ አጥብቀን እናወግዛለን !!

ወጣት አንተነህ አስፋው ለገሰ በ1983 ዓ.ም በዲላ ዞን፣ ፍሰሀ ገነት ወረዳ፣ ቀበሌ 02 ተወለደ፡፡ ይህ ወጣት ተማሪ በጎንደር ዩኒቨርሲቲ የ3ኛ ዓመት የማርኬቲንግ ክፍል /department/ ተማሪ ሲሆን ወደ ዩኒቨርሲቲ በ2004 ዓ.ም የገባና በ2006 ዓ.ም ይመረቅ የነበረ ነው፡፡ ይሁን እንጂ ህዳረ 24/2006 ዓ.ም ቁጥራቸው ከ60 በላይ ከሚሆኑ ከክፍሉ ተማሪዎች ጋር በመሆን ዳሽን ቢራ በተባለ ቦታ የግብዣ ፕሮግራም አድርገው ነበር፡፡ ከግብዣው ፕሮግራም በኋላ ከምሽቱ 3፡00 ሰዓት ላይ ወደ ዩንቨርሲቲው ቅጥር ግቢ እየተመለሰ ሳለ የኦሮሞ ተማሪዎች ለብቻቸው ተነጥለው የትግል ዘፈኖችን እየዘፈኑ ይሄዱ ነበር፡፡ የሀበሻ ልጆችም አካባቢውን በጩኸት በመበጥበጥ በመንገድ ላይ ሲንቀሳቀስ የነበረውን ሰው ሁሉ ሲደበድቡ ነበር፡፡ የኦሮ ልጆች በወቅቱ የትግል ዘፈኖችን ከመዝፈን ውጪ ያነሱት ሁከት አልነበረም፡፡ ሆኖም ግን ከዳሽን አለፍ ብለው “ቀሀ” የተባለውን ወንዝ ተሻግረው 18 ቀበሌ ሲደርሱ የሀበሻ ልጆች መንገዱ ላይ ተሰማርተው የነበሩ የወያኔ ታጣቂዎች ላይ ድንጋይ መወርወር ጀመሩ፡፡ የወያኔ ታጣቂዎችም እየረበሹ ያሉትን የሀበሻ ልጆች ትተው ትኩረታቸውን የኦሮሞ ልጆች ላይ በማድረግ እናንተ ኦነግን ታወድሳላችሁ በማለት ተኩስ ከፈቱባቸው፡፡ በወቅቱ በግንባር ቀደምትነት የትግል ዘፈኖች እየዘፈነ የነበረው አንተነህ አስፋው ሲሆን እሱን ጀርባው ላይ በመምታት ሌሎቹን በተኗቸው፡፡ ይህ ልጅ የተመታው ከምሽቱ 3፡30 ሰዓት ላይ ሲሆን ወዲያውኑ ወደ ዩኒቨርስቲው ሆስፒታል የተወሰደ ቢሆንም የደረሰበት ጉዳት ከባድ በመሆኑ ወደ ሚኒሊክ ሆስፒታል እንደተወሰደ እያለ ሂወቱ ሊያልፍ ችሏል፡፡ ከልጁ ሞት ጋር በማያያዘ ህዳር 25/2013 ከ3,000 – 4,000 የሚሆኑ የዩኒቨርሲቲው ተማሪዎች በተለይ የኦሮሞ ልጆች ወደ ሆስፒታሉ በሚወስደው መንገድ ላይ ሰላማዊ ሰልፍ በመውጣት “we need freedom”  ”ነፃነት እንፈልጋለን”  በማለት ድምፃቸውን አሰምተዋል፡፡ ከዚህ በተጨማሪም የዩኒቨርሲቲውን ንብረት ያወደሙ ሲሆን እስካሁን ድረስ በዩኒቨርስቲው ቅጥር ግቢ የሚገኘው የኦሮሞ ተማሪ፣ አስተማሪና ሌሎች ሰራተኞች ትምህርትና ስራቸውን አቋርጠዋል፡፡ የሀበሻ ልጆች ግን ወደ ትምህርታቸው ተመልሰው  እየተማሩ ናቸው፡፡ ወያኔ ይህን ስልት የተጠቀመው  የኦሮሞ ልጆችን ለመጨረስ ነው ሲል የሪፖርቱ ምንጭ ይገልፃል፡፡ “በጥይት ተመትቶ ህይወቱ ያለፈውን ወገናችንን ደም ሳንበቀል አንቀመጥም ትምርቱም ይቅርብን” ብለው በርካታ ቁጥር ያላቸው የኦሮሞ ልጆች ትምህርታቸውን አቋርጠው እንደሚገኙ ሪፖርቱ ይገልፃል፡፡

ድል ለኦሮሞ ህዝብ !!
