Oromo Ethiopians celebrate #BoycottBedele beer victory

Members of Ethiopia's largest ethnic group are celebrating online after the Heineken beer companyannounced that its Ethiopian franchise would cancel sponsorship of pop star Teddy Afro.

The Bedele beer company dropped its support for Teddy Afro's upcoming national tour on Thursday, though it did not give a reason. Ethiopian Oromos have been campaigning to boycott the beer over controversial statements allegedly made by the entertainer.

Oromos were outraged after he allegedly praised Emperor Menelik II, a 19th-century ruler who some see as a unifier and who placed territories belonging to Oromo and other groups under centralised rule. The magazine quoted Teddy Afro as saying, "For me, Menelik's unification campaign was a holy war". The artist's most recent album also has a song dedicated to the emperor, among other popular historical leaders.

Teddy Afro says the quote was falsely attributed to him, writing on Facebook, "Under circumstances unbeknownst to me and due to the error of the magazine, my photo was printed along side a different quote which is not in line with my belief or journey.... The magazine has issued a correction and apologized to us for its error." Some expressed doubt that the comment was an error. 

Many celebrated the news from Heineken online, while some said they would not be satisfied without an apology from the singer.

Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia Discuss Forming Committee to Study "Renaissance Dam"

Before heading to the Sudanese capital Khartoum, Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Mohamed Abdel Motleb, who is chairing Egypt's delegation to the meeting of the irrigation ministers of Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia to be held on 5-6 January, said that Egypt's new strategy is based on promoting cooperation and partnership with the Nile basin states.

He noted that there are directives from the Egyptian president not to give up one drop of Egypt's Nile water quota.

The minister said that Sudan is playing an effective role in mediating between Egypt and Ethiopia, stressing that Egypt will not accept the harmful impacts that the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam would pose to its water share.

He highlighted that Egypt's share of Nile water is 55, 5 billion cubic meters according to the 1959 Nile agreement between Egypt and Sudan, noting that the Egyptian population at this time was 25 million and today has reached 85 million.

He went on to say that Egypt is passing through a stage of water poverty, stressing that the Egyptian government is currently seeking promoting development in the Nile basin states in a way that does not harm the interests of the Egyptian citizen.

He added that the water currently present in Egypt is sufficient for the coming two years, noting that an agreement has been reached in the last meeting among the three countries to carry out studies on the impact of the Ethiopian dam through establishing a joint committee with the cooperation of international experts agreed upong by the three sides.

በሃገር ማቅናት ስም የተፈጸሙ ግፎችን ይክዳሉ

በቀለ ጅራታ ከስዊድን

ባለፉት ዘመናትም ሆነ ዛሬ በኢትዮዽያ ኣመሰራረት ላይ በውስጣ በሚኖሩ ሃዝቦች መካከል መግባባት የለም። የሃገሪቷን ስልጣን በሃይል የያዙት ወገኖች “ሃገር የማቅናት ስራ ሰራን እንጂ, የፈጸምነው በደል የለም;” እያሉ በሃገር ማቅናት ስም የተፈጸሙ ግፎችን ይክዳሉ። ለምንም ኣላማ ይሁን የተገፉ፣ ነጻነታቸውንና ክብራቸውን የተነጠቁ ህዝቦች ደግሞ በሃይል ሃገራችንን ተነጠቅን እንጂ ወደን ኣይደለም በማለት የተነጠቁኣቸውን መብቶች በማስመለስ ለእኩልነት፣ ለነጻነትና ለፍትሕ ይታገላሉ።

በነዚህ ሁለት ተጻራሪ ሃሳቦች ምክንያት – “የሃገር ኣቅኚ” ወገንም ሆኑ ሌሎችም – በኣንድ ላይ ሰላም በማጣት ለዘመናት ስማቅቁ ለመኖር ተገደዋል። ኣለም ሰልጥኖ ጨረቃ ላይ በወጣበት ዘመን እንኳን የኣስተሳሰብ ለውጥ ለማምጣት የተሳናቸው ወገኖች ዛሬም ቀድሞ የተበላሹትን ሁኔታዎች ለማስተካከል ከመስራት ይልቅ, የሕዝቦችን ቁስል  የሚያደሙ  ታሪኮችን ለማደስ እየተሽቀዳደሙ  ይታያሉ።

በተለይም ባለፉት ሃያ ሁለት ኣመታት, ኣእምሮና ህሊና የጎደላቸው ግለስቦች ወይም ቡድኖች በሃገር ኣንድነት ስም ጸረ-ኣንድነትና ኣፍራሽ ድርጊቶችን ስያራግቡ እንደከረሙ ትክክለኛ ኣስተሳሰብ ያላቸው የማይክዱት ነው። ለሃገር ኣንድነት ተቆርቃሪ እየመሰሉ ለነጻነትና ለኩልነት፣ የሚታገሉትን ህዝቦች  እንደሃገር ኣፍራሽ ሲቆጥሩና ሲያወግዙ እስከዛሬ ዘልቀዋል። እነዚህ ወገኖች የራሳቸውን የትምክህት ስሜትና ኣስተሳሰብ ከማዳመጥ በስተቀር ለነገ የህዝቦች ኣብሮነት ደንታ የላቸውም። ባለፉት ሃያ ሁለት ኣመታት ህዝቦችን የሚያራርቅ እንጂ የሚያቀራርብ ተግባር ስፈጽሙ ኣልታዩም። ጤነኛ ኣስተሳስብ ያለው ወገን ተበደልኩ የሚለውን ወገን በማዳመጥ ያለፉት ስተቶች እንዳይደገሙ የበኩሉን ይሰራል እንጂ ኣልተበደልክም፣ ወይም የተፈጸሙት በደሎች ትክክል ናቸው ቢሎ በተበዳዩ ኣያፌዝም። እንደዚህ ኣይነት ኣስተሳሰብ ኣንድ ነን፣ ተዋልደናል፣ ሁላችንም የኣንድ ሃገር ልጆች ነን ከሚል   ኣይቀርብም።

ከላይ እንደመግቢያ ላነሳሁት ምክንያት የሆነኝ ሰሞኑን የኦሮሞና የደቡብ ህዝቦችን በመውረር በወቅቱ መጠነ-ሰፊ በደሎችን ያደረሰውን ምኒልክን እንደ ኣዲስ የማወደስና ከነልሰን ማንደላ በበለጠ ደግ የሰራ ጀግና እያሉ የእንተርነት ድህረ ገጾችን እያጣበቡ ያሉ ወገኖች ሁኔታ ነው። እነዚህ ወገኖች ምኒልክ ለእነሱ ጀግና ሲሆን ለሌሎች እንደ ኦሮሞ፣ ሱማሌ፣ ሲዳማ፣ ወላይታ፣ ወዘተ ለምን ጀግናቸው ኣድርገው እንደማይመለከቱ ለምን እንዳልተገነዘቡ ኣይገባኝም፣ እነሱ ምኒልክ “ሃገር ኣቀና” ብሉም እሱ የፈጸመው ከኣውሮፓ ቅኝ ገዢዎች የበለጠ ግፍና በደል  በመሆኑ ማወደስ ሳይሆን ታሪኩም በግፈኞች ተርታ መጻፍ ያለበት ነው።

በጣም የሚገርመው ደግሞ እንደ ጋዜጠኛ ተመስገን ደሳለኝ ኣይነቱ ከዚህ በፊት “ወገናዊነት የማያጠቃውና የሃገሪቷን የፖለቲካ ሁኔታ ሚዛናዊ በሆነ መልኩ በማቅረብ በብዙ አንባቢዎች ዘንድ እኔን ጨምሮ ኣድናቆት የነበረው” ግለሰብ ከሱና ከመሰሎቹ በስተቀር ምኒልክ በሌሎች የኢቶዽያ ህዝቦች ዘንድ በምን ሁኔታ እንደሚታወስ እያወቀ በህዝቦች መካከል ውጥረት ነግሶ ባለበት ጊዜ ምኒልክን ተወዳዳሪ የሌለው ጀግና ኣድርጎ ማቅረቡ ነው። ዘር ከልጓም ይስባል እንደሚባለው ሆኖበት ወይም  ከወገኖቹ መካከል መልካም ታሪክ ያለውን በማጣት ሊሆን ይችላል የሀገሪቷ ፖለቲካ ችግር ውስጥ መኖሩን እሱ እራሱ በተደጋጋሚ ጽፎ ሲያስነብብ ቆይቷል። ለፖለቲካ ችግርና ውጥረት መንስኤ የሆነውም እንደዚህ ኣይነቱ የተዛባና የሃገሪቷን ጠቅላላ ህዝቦች የማይወክሉና ከኣንድ ወገን ብቻ የሚወደሱ ኣመለካከቶች መሆናቸው ነው። ይህ በኣሁኑ ጊዜ እንደዚህ ኣይነት የተበዳዩን ወገን ጠባሳ የሚያደሙ ታሪኮችን ከተቀበሩበት ጉድጓድ እያወጡ መጻፍ ማለት በባለታሪኩ የተፈጸሙት ግፎችና በደሎች ሁሉ ትክክል ናቸው ብሎ በተበደለው ህዝብ ላይ እንደማፌዝና የለየለት ንቀት መሆኑን መረዳትና መታረም ያስፈልጋል።

ምኒልክን ጀግናና የተመሰከረለት ታላቅ መሪ ኣድርገው ያልነበረውን ባህርይ ኣልብሰው በኣሁኑ ጊዜ ማቅረብ ማለት ኣላማው እራሱ የምኒልክ ኣገዛዝ ከፈጸመው ግፍ የከፋ እንጂ ያነሰ ኣይደለም። ይህንን ኣይነቱን ታሪክ ነው ብለው ሞቶ የተረሳውን የሚያራግቡ ግለሰቦች ወ ይም ቡድኖች ለኢትዮዽያ ሃዝቦች ኣንድነት የለየላቸው ጠንቅ መሆናቸውን ማወቅ ኣለባቸው። እነዚህ ወገኖች ምኒልክ ስተት የሰራው “የተበታተኑ ሃዝቦችን ኣንድ ለማድረግና ሃገር ለማቅናት” ነበር ብለው ልያሳምኑን ይሞክራሉ። ወራሪው ምኒሊክ ግን እንኳን የተበታተኑትን ህዝቦች ማቀራረብ ይቅርና የወረራቸውን ህዝቦች ኣንድም ጊዜ ህዝቦቼ ናቸው ኣላለም። ያደረገው ነገር ቢኖር ግማሹን የራሱና የተከታዮቹ መገልገያ ባሪያ ሲይደርጋቸው ሌሎችን ደግሞ ሰብስቦ ለውጭ ባለውለታዎቹ ሸጣቸው። እሱ በዘረጋው መንገድ ወራሾቹም የህዝቦችን መሬት ቀምተው ገባርና ጭሰኛ በማድረግ ያለ ርህራሄ የህዝቦችን ደም ስጠጡ ኖረው በ ህዝቦች ኣብዮት ልገረሰሱ ቻሉ። ያ ሲሆን የሰሜኑ ኣርሶ ኣደር መሬትን በርስተ ጉልትነት ይዘው ለዘር ማንዘራቸው ያስተላልፉ ነበር። የዛሬዎቹ የምኒልክና የሃይለስላሴን ታሪክ ለማራገብና ከሰሩት ግፍ ነጻ ለማድረግ የሚራወጡት ቢያንስ እንደዚያ ኣይነት ኣድሎኣዊ ኣገዛዝን ሰህተት ነበር ብለው በማውገዝ ለወደፊቱ ሌሎች ስተቶች እንዳይኖሩ ለመስራት መነሳሳትና በግድ ለማምጣት የሚሞክሩትን የኢትዮዽያ ኣንድነት በስራ ማሳየት ነበረባቸው።

ከዘመን ዘመን ተጭባጩን ሁኔታ ለመረዳት ኣእምሮም ሆነ ህሊና የሌላቸው ለነገ የሚባልን የማያውቁና በህዝቦች መካከል ሆነ ብለው ግጭት ለመፈጠር­ ወይም ከመቀራረብ መራራቅን የሚስብኩ ቡድኖችንና ግለሰቦችን ነው። እነዚህ ወገኖች በኔ ግምት ከኋላቸው የምያስቡለት ህዝብ የላቸውም። ምክንያቱም ሰላም ማጣትና የእርስበርስ ግጭት ወይም ጦርነት ምን ያህል ኣስከፊና ኣውዳሚ መሆኑንና እንደዚህ ኣይነት ሁኔታ ቢፈጠር ጉዳት የደርስበታል ብለው የምያስቡለት ህዝብ ብኖራቸው ሁልጊዜ ህዝቦችን የሚያጋጭ ወይም ወደ ግጭት የሚወስድ መንገድ ባልተከተሉ ነበር። በርግጥ  በኣለም ህዝቦች ዘንድ   የተወገዘውን የናዚ ኣላማ ደጋፊዎች ባውሮፓ በተለይም በጀርመን ሃገር በዛሬው ጊዜ እየተስፋፉ መሆናቸው ስታሰብ የነዚህም ላይደንቅ ይችላል። ዛሬ ግፍ ኣድራጊውን ምኒልክን እንደዚህ ኣስከፊና ውጥረት በነገሰበት ወቅት ባለ መልካም ታሪክ ኣድርጎ ለማቅረብ መሞከር ከናዚ ጀርመን ኣላማ ደጋፊዎች ተለይቶ ኣይታይም።

በኔ ግምት ኣለም በሰለጠነበትና በቀደሙት ዘመናት የተፈጸሙትን ግፎች በማውገዝ ለመጪው ትውልድ የመከባበርና የመደጋገፍ ሁኔታ እንዲጠነክር በመስራት ላይ ባሉበት ወቅት የድሮ ግፈኞችን ታሪክ ከጉድጋድ ፈልጎ ታሪክ ኣለን ማለት  የጥሩ ታሪክ ኣልባ  ወ ይም  የታሪክ ደሃ  መሆንን ያመለክታል። ለብዙ ዘመናት በውሸት ታሪክ እራስንም ሆነ የኣለም ህብረተሰብን ለማታለል ተሞክሯል። እውነትና ንጋት እያደር ይበራል እንደሚባለው እነዚያ ኩሸቶች ዛሬ ተጋልጠዋል። ስለዚህ ኣዲስ ታሪክ ለመስራት መዘጋጀት እንጂ የረከሰና  ኣፈር ለበላው ታሪክ ለማደስ ጊዜን ከማጥፋት በላይ ለትዝብት ይዳርጋል።

ስለዚህ የነዚህን ጸረ ህዝቦች፣ የሰላምና የወደፊት የህዝቦች ኣንድነት እንቅፋቶችና የመበታተን ኣደጋ መሪ ተዋናዮችን ሰላም ወዳድ የሆኑ፣ ኣእምሮና ህሊና ያላቸው የኣበሻ ልጆች ድምጻቸውን ክፍ ኣድርገው ልቃወሙና ሊያወግዙት ይገባል። ምንልክም ሆነ ሌሎች ገዢዎች ስለሰሩት ግፎች የዛሬዎች ልጆቻቸውና የልጅ ልጆቻቸው እንዲጠየቁ ወይም ካሳ እንድክፍሉ የጠቃቸው ኣካል የለም። ነገር ግን በኦሮሞና በሌሎች የደቡብ ህዝቦች ብቻ ሳይሆን በማንኛውም ህዝብ ላይ በድል መፈጸም ትክክል ኣለመሆኑን መገነዘብና ማንም ይፈጽም ማውገዝ ህሊና ካለው የሚጠበቅ ነው።

Human rights activist Obbo Jawar Mohammed endorsed the #BoycottBedele campaign from the beginning; #BoycottBedele sought to stop the glorification of the black Hitler, Menelik II, by minstrel/’Azmari’ Teddy Afro, who characterized the genocide Menelik II waged on the Oromo, Sidama, Wolayta, and other nations and peoples in the Ethiopian empire as a “holy war.”

This is what Obbo Jawar Mohammed noted on his Facebook after the suspension of the #BoycottBedele campaign following the withdrawal of Heineken’s/Bedele’s sponsorship of Teddy Afro’s “Journey of Love for the Black Hitler, Menelik” concert.

“Congratulations team #BoycottBedele and those who stood with the just cause. You roared in unison, and you shattered the inflated wall of arrogance. You taught Bedele that it cannot throw a party over the graveyards of our ancestors. You rose up against all odds, overcame multiple obstacles and you beat the well-financed and brutish right-wing machinery hands down! Hey, Qubee generation, you have passed this test with flying colours. This is just the beginning, more work awaits us!

One would have hoped this episode provided valuable lesson to the other side, but predictably they are missing out once again. They are sticking to their old and tired tactic of belittling Oromo. As usual, first they dismissed the campaign, then they tried to distort it, and they threw the kitchen sink. Now, although we beat them in an open and public fight over the last week, they don’t want to admit; hence, they attempt to give credit to Woyane. The obvious fact is that the regime wanted and would benefit from a prolonged tension rather than a quick conclusion. Hence, it has no rational reason to embark on such intervention so early.

The campaign beat them because it’s on the right side of the argument; it utilized efficient strategies and worked tirelessly. The campaign had direct dealing with Heineken/Bedele both on the ground and at headquarters. It is this direct confrontation, and the application of open and direct pressure that forced Bedele to retreat. Basically, Bedele cancelled the contract because it stood to lose in the beer market. The campaign first warned, and then posed credible and visible threat to the company’s sales. The company asked for opinions of its distributors and sales representatives, who overwhelmingly warmed headquarters that the campaign will have devastating repercussion. As the protest spread and the message began to take effect, the call came in to unplug the sponsorship.

Thus, right wingers, instead of recycling የናቴ መቀነት አደናቀፈኝ, you should admit that you were wrong, outsmarted and outperformed. More importantly, you should know the Oromo voice is no longer one that can be drowned through noise and distortion.”
