Military Response can never solve political questions/ OLF Press Release

OLF,ABO Gadaan Gadaa Bilisummaati!

Military Response can never solve political questions

Different Nationals under the Tigray Peoples Liberation Front (TPLF) oppressive rule in Ethiopia have been protesting using different means. They have been exposed to tyrannical, oligarchy, nepotism, ethnic discrimination and destitution caused by blatant economic exploitation. The Oromo people in particular have been subjected to unbearable misery ever since the time of conquest. Every attempt to alleviate the burden of this subjugation has been dealt using violent military campaigns and all sorts of repressive measures. One of such measures is misrepresenting people’s demands and use it to pit them against each other.
The peoples’ legitimate demand for their rights has been confronted by violent suppression; killing, torture and other ways of repression by the TPLF regime. The current violent repressive measures against the Oromo protestors, in which tens of youth were killed and as many more are wounded by daylight campaign last week, are a vivid evidence of this.
As if unleashing of its massive military power against the peaceful demonstrators is not enough the TPLF regime is conspiring to pit Tigrian nationals living outside Tiray against the hosting people by secretly exclusively arming the former with Kalashnikovs improvised with lenses imported from China for snipers. This is further evidence for the sinister motif the TPLF regime has for Ethiopia.
The OLF condemns such moves that target not only the Oromo people but all the peoples in Ethiopia who are peacefully demanding their legitimate rights. We want to affirm to all the peoples in Ethiopia in general and the Tigrayan people in particular that our struggle never targets any particular people but the tyrannical oligarchic system run by the TPLF, that subjugates all the peoples including the Tigraian. This position has been put forward from the inception of our organization that all the peoples in Ethiopia
are friends of our struggle, and any national has the right to live and work in liberated Oromia. Hence we call upon all the nationals not to heed to the defamation campaign that misrepresents our legitimate struggle but to fully support and side with the Oromo people.
The guarantee for future co-existence is not perpetuating military subjugation but mutually acknowledging and practically accepting the legitimate right of every people. We urge the Tigrayan nationals in Oromia to reject the move by the TPLF to exclusively arm them, which will eventually be used to pit them against the Oromo and other nationals. We forewarn that the TPLF is the sole culprit of any subsequent disaster that this move is poised to cause.
We urge all sectors of the Oromo national, both at home and abroad, to intensify the struggle to get rid of the over century old subjugation once and for all.
Victory to the Oromo People!

Minority’s Master Plan to Cleanse Majority – Opinion Re: #OromoProtests

Gadaa.com
Map: The Current Addis Ababa (Small Circle with Black Borders) and the Surrounding Oromian Regions Slated for Annexation by the New Addis Ababa Master Plan
By Awwal Nagawoo*
The minority junta TPLF government has been designing and implementing a number of massacres and atrocities on the Oromo people – systematic evicting them from their land through tactful invasions, and degradation of the Oromo land through pollution of the Oromian aquatic system and chemical poisoning of the Oromo land; in short, misappropriation of all Oromo resources by all means from time to time.
In April 2014 the current invader of Oromia – the minority-based TPLF government announced the new “Master Plan” proposed by the Finfinne (Addis Ababa) City Administration. The so-called plan was finalized without having pilot discussions and/or consultations with potential stakeholders (the Oromo people – who are the owners of Finfinne, the Oromo farmers living around the city of Finfinne, and Oromo leaders and intellectuals), and the systematic move and central aim of the plan is not to bring development or better living conditions to Oromos. It’s simply to divide and disintegrate the State of Oromia into many pieces, to kill the sense of ownership and disfranchise the Oromo people. To that end, they have started to implement the Finfinne Integrated Plan to annex the whole of Central Oromia by the Federal government, and to make Oromos Internally Displaced People (IDP’s) and refugees all over the world.
The emergence of a few nationalists and Oromo students’ protests played a decisive role in transforming the Oromo struggle – providing it with an organized and centralized home-based youth leadership. Currently, #OromoProtests has revolted against the TPLF Master Plan, and TPLF’s tyrannical security forces have cracked down on the peaceful university students using live bullets, according to local and international news agencies.
After live bullets had been used on #OromoProtests in Ambo, Mada-Walabu, Wallaggaa, Haramayaa, Jimma, Dire Dawa, Adama, and others towns – which have reported dozens shot and killed, and hundreds injured by the TPLF junta, thousands more were also arrested and taken to unknown places. Peaceful rallies of #OromoProtests have increasingly spread to Diaspora Oromos in cities around the world, and they have organized peaceful rallies in solidarity with #OromoProtests, and to raise awareness that, with the new Addis Ababa Master Plan, innocent Oromo farmers will be badly affected, and to disseminate info about the ongoing killings, crackdowns and systematic invasions, and to advocate to human rights groups and individuals to make huge international impacts for justice and equality for all. Peaceful demonstrators are calling upon the independent media houses to highlight the neglected issues of Oromos.
The TPLF governance is very shallow. It is based neither on meaningful political principles, constitutionalism, nor on principles to protect and safeguard the fundamental rights of the people. Its terror machinery and mercenaries do whatever is possible to keep them on the shoulders of Oromos, and other nations and nationalities in that Ethiopian empire, and to safeguard the interests of their foreign investors.
The Oromo people call the master plan a “cleansing plan” against the Oromo people. There will be no more crime than systematically evicting the indigenous people from their land, making them homeless, scattering Oromo family members, manipulating their resources, trading their capital by the name of investments with foreigners, and largely dividing the Oromia Region into clusters.

——– ENGLISH VERSION of the BERLIN RALLY ———
A Call for Demonstration Against TPLF’s “Genocide” Plan and to Demand Justice for Oromo Students Massacre, Freedom and Self-Determination
The Oromo Community in Berlin and Union of Oromo Students in Germany (UOSG) have jointly planned to hold a protest rally in front of the Office of the Federal Chancellor, Berlin (auf dem Platz zwischen Paul-Löbe-Allee und Otto-von-Bismark-Allee) on Friday 9th May, 2014. The purpose of this protest rally is to strongly protest against the ongoing widespread human rights violations and extrajudicial killings of Oromos in general and Oromo University, High school, and Elementary students in particular by the TPLF minority regime in Ethiopia. The latest massacre is a continuation of what has become customary for the minority junta to shoot indiscriminately against peaceful Oromo students and protesters, some as young as 14 years, with snipers and other forces equipped with heavy machinery. All Oromos and friends of Oromos in Germany are invited to turn up and stand against these evil acts of the Ethiopian dictators.
We strongly demand that the authorities ordering and executing this massacre against Oromo students and Oromo people be held accountable for their crimes at an international court.

Washington, DC

Gadaa.com
A Call to Demonstrate Against the dictatorial Ethiopian Government.
Dear all Oromo in the Washington Metro Area and Elsewhere,
The Oromo Community Organization (OCO), the Oromo Youth Self-help Association (OYSA/WWDO) of the Washington Metropolitan area, the International Oromo Women’s Organization (IOWO) and the Human Rights League of the Horn of Africa (HRLHA) have jointly planned to hold a protest rally in front of the White House and State Department on Friday, May 9, 2014 starting 9:00am to 1:00pm against the TPLF led minority regime in Ethiopia.
Also, the protest rally will request the U.S administration to exert utmost pressure on the Ethiopian dictatorial regime so that the latter can stop the arbitrary arrests, kidnappings, tortures and killings of innocent Oromo students for simply exercising their God-given basic human rights; freedom of speech, freedom of assembly and freedom of peaceful demonstration. We request because the regime is the ally of the United States. In particular, the rally will demand a halt to the killings of Oromo students who are peacefully protesting against the so-called “Integrated Development Master Plan” whose sole purpose is to illegally expand the capital city, Addis Ababa/Finfinnee towards Oromia State, thereby systematically evicting Oromo farmers from their ancestral lands as well as dispossessing them of their properties, identity, culture, language, freedom, way of life…etc.
It is to be noted that the master plan is against the principles of the constitution of Ethiopia itself. According to the constitution, Oromia is a geopolitical nation defined geographically and jurisdictionally with its boundaries. The constitution further states that the special interest/integrity/ of Oromia will be maintained in Addis Ababa, because Addis Ababa itself is the heartland of Oromia. Contrary to this, machination of the so-called Addis Ababa-Oromia state integrated development master plan is bent on destroying Oromos’ identity as well as boundaries of Oromia. In general, the plan has a hidden motive to destroy Oromia and the Oromo people.
The principles of integrated development does not infringe on the geopolitical entity of the beneficiaries of the development. For example, integrated development of the District of Colombia-Maryland-Virginia does not, in any way, encroach on the entities of the States of District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. What make the minority led government in Ethiopia unique is its dictatorial and fascistic characteristics.
All Oromos, democratic nations and friends of Oromo should stand against the heinous acts being perpetrated towards Oromo students by the minority led Ethiopian government as well as against the so-called Addis Ababa-Oromia state integrated master plan.
We also demand that the authorities ordering and executing this massacre against Oromo students and Oromo people be held accountable for their crimes at an international court.
OCO, OYSA, IOWO and HRLHA are calling upon all Oromos and friends of Oromo to demonstrate against this killer and cunning minority led regime in Ethiopia.
Sincerely,
OCO, OYSA, IOWO and HRLHA Joint Board of Directors

Ethiopia: UN Review Should Condemn Crackdown

Activists, Journalists Persecuted Under Draconian Laws

(Geneva) – United Nations member countries should call on Ethiopia to stop targeting activists and the media under draconian laws. The UN Human Rights Council will review Ethiopia’s human rights record under the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) procedure on May 6, 2014.

A Human Rights Watch submission to the UN on Ethiopia highlights its ongoing suppression of the media and nongovernmental organizations, and the lack of accountability for torture and other serious abuses by its security forces. The arbitrary arrest of nine bloggers and journalists on April 25 and 26, just 10 days before the review, reflects Ethiopia’s blatant disregard for fundamental rights and should be strongly condemned by UN members.

“The UN review is taking place just as Ethiopia is renewing its crackdown on free speech,” said Leslie Lefkow, deputy Africa director. “To make this review meaningful, UN member countries should forcefully tell Ethiopia that its attacks on the media and activist groups are a blight on its human rights record.”
Since Ethiopia’s first UPR review in 2009, the human rights situation has deteriorated substantially. The authorities have shown harsh intolerance of any criticism of government actions and have sharply restricted the rights to free expression and association.

Despite Ethiopia’s commitment during the 2009 review to take “measures to provide for free and independent media,” Ethiopia now has one of the most repressive media environments in the world. Numerous journalists languish in prison, independent media outlets have been closed down, and many journalists have fled the country.

Critics of government policy – including journalists, rights activists, and opposition party supporters – risk harassment, arbitrary detention, and politically motivated prosecutions. Many prosecutions are carried out under repressive laws that have dramatically curtailed the ability of independent Ethiopian and international organizations to investigate and report on human rights violations and other concerns.

Critics are also subject to illegal surveillance of telephone communications, and the contents of these communications are sometimes used during unlawful interrogations. Government censors routinely block websites of opposition parties, independent media sites, blogs, and several international media outlets.
During the 2009 review Ethiopia rejected recommendations to amend two draconian laws – the Charities and Societies Proclamation (CSO law) and the Anti-Terrorism Proclamation – to comply with international human rights standards.

“Ethiopia’s membership in the Human Rights Council should make it a leader in respecting rights, not repressing them,” Lefkow said. “UN members should press Ethiopia to amend the laws it uses to decimate independent media and civil society.”

The Ethiopian government has failed to conduct credible investigations or prosecutions of members of the security forces implicated in torture and other rights violations, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. This includes security force abuses in Gambella, the Somali regionOromia, and in Somalia.

In an October 2013 report, Human Rights Watch documented the use of torture by police and investigators against detainees in Maekelawi, the main investigation center in Addis Ababa, the capital.

At the Human Rights Council, countries should stress the need for Ethiopia to address torture and other serious crimes by security forces, and to investigate and prosecute security personnel responsible for serious crimes.

“Ethiopia’s refusal to address serious crimes by security forces is a major obstacle to human rights progress and deeply distressing for the families of the victims,” Lefkow said. “UN members need to push Ethiopia to meaningfully investigate grave violations and to hold those responsible to account.”

Prime Minister of the People’s Republic of China Li Keqiang (L) and Ethiopia Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn attend a treaty signing ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Addis Ababa, May 4, 2014.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang arrived in Ethiopia Sunday on the first leg of his four-nation tour of Africa.

China's official Xinhua news agency says Li will hold talks with Ethiopian leaders, including Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn and President Mulatu Teshome.  Li will also meet with Chinese and African business leaders for talks on trade cooperation.

While in Ethiopia, the Chinese premier will visit the African Union headquarters to deliver a speech on Beijing's commitment to deepening the China-Africa strategic partnership.

Li will also visit Nigeria, Angola and Kenya on his week-long trip.

Before his departure from Beijing, Li released a statement urging Chinese companies in Africa to abide by local laws and regulations and take responsibility to protect the interests of local communities and the environment.

He also called on relevant African countries to strengthen market regulation and protect the lawful rights and interests of Chinese companies and the safety of their employees.
