Morsy toppled

Egypt army topples Morsy

The Egyptian army toppled Islamist President Mohamed Morsy on Wednesday after a week of bloodshed that killed nearly 50 people as millions took to the streets to demand an end to his turbulent single year of rule.
The announcement, made on state television by Morsy's own defence minister, armed forces chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, drew a rapturous welcome from the protesters who have camped out on the streets of Cairo for days.
Sisi also announced a freezing of the Islamist-drafted constitution and early presidential elections.
Thousands of people immediately took to the streets of the capital to celebrate, cheering, whistling, letting off firecrackers, and honking car horns in joyous scenes.
But Morsy's office rejected the move as "illegal" and called on Egyptians to peacefully resist the "coup".
Morsy, Egypt's first freely elected president, came under massive pressure in the run-up to Sunday's anniversary of his maiden year in office, with his opponents accusing him of failing the 2011 revolution by concentrating power in Islamist hands.
The embattled 62-year-old proposed a "consensus government" as a way out of the country's worst crisis since the 2011 uprising ended three decades of authoritarian rule by Hosni Mubarak.
But the United States urged Morsy to "do more" as a military deadline passed for him to meet the demands of the people following a week of bloody unrest during mass protests calling for him to quit.
The advice came too late, however, as the army said the head of the Supreme Constitutional Court, Adly al-Mansour, a previously little known judge, would become the new leader of the Arab world's most populous country.
Opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei, the UN nuclear watchdog chief, and the heads of the Coptic Church and Al-Azhar, Sunni Islam's highest seat of learning, sat alongside the armed forces chief as he announced Morsy's overthrow on state television.
The choreography was designed to show broad civilian support for the military's move to topple Morsy, Egypt's first freely elected leader, dashing the hopes of supporters who had seen his elevation to the presidency after years underground as one of the key achievements of the 2011 revolution.
Morsy's camp had earlier denounced the army's intervention as a coup.
"For the sake of Egypt and for historical accuracy, let's call what is happening by its real name: military coup," Essam al-Haddad, Morsy's national security adviser, said in a statement on Facebook.
As tension mounted and crowds poured onto the streets to demand Morsy's resignation, Haddad said: "As I write these lines I am fully aware that these may be the last lines I get to post on this page."
AFP correspondents reported seeing dozens of armoured personnel carriers heading towards Islamist gatherings at Cairo University, Heliopolis and Nasr City.
But in Cairo's Tahrir Square, the security forces looked on as tens of thousands of anti-Morsy protesters rallied in a demonstration that dwarfed that of the embattled president's supporters in Nasr City, on the opposite side of town.
"Come here O Sisi, Morsy isn't my president," the flag-waving protesters chanted in the square, referring to the army chief.
The crowd swelled at nightfall, after a scorching day that saw police officers hand out water to the demonstrators in the middle of Tahrir, epicentre of the 2011 uprising that ended three decades of authoritarian rule by Hosni Mubarak.
The powerful military had issued a 48-hour deadline on Monday for Morsy to meet the "people's demands", a day after millions of protesters took to the streets across the troubled country calling for him to resign.
Thousands of people also gathered in Nasr City in a show of support for Morsy, despite an attack that killed 16 of them and injured 200 overnight.
That spate of bloodletting took to almost 50 the number of people killed in Egypt since the latest crisis flared a week ago ahead of Sunday's anniversary of Morsy's swearing-in.
Opponents accuse Morsy of having betrayed the revolution by concentrating power in Islamist hands and of sending the economy into freefall. His supporters said he inherited many problems, and that he should be allowed to see out his mandate, which had been supposed to run until 2016.
In a late night speech on Tuesday, a defiant Morsy said he had been freely elected more than a year ago and intended to carry on his duties. The only alternative was more bloodshed.
Upping the stakes, senior armed forces commanders meeting on Wednesday swore to defend Egypt with their lives, a source close to the military told AFP.
"We swear to God that we will sacrifice our blood for Egypt and its people against all terrorists, extremists and the ignorant," they declared in an oath led by General Sisi, the source said.
Egypt's press had predicted Wednesday would be the day of Morsy's departure.
"Today: Ouster or Resignation," splashed the state-owned mass circulation Al-Ahram newspaper. "The End," declared the independent Al-Watan.
Aside from Tahrir, Nasr City and a few other areas, Cairo's streets were unusually quiet, with many choosing to stay home over fears of more violence. "The Islamists declared war on the rest of the population yesterday. I'm very scared," said resident Soha Abdelrahman.
All eyes were on the military, after Al-Ahram reported details of the its roadmap for the future.
The plan provides for an interim administration, of up to one year, which would include the head of the supreme constitutional court and a senior army figure.
The constitution, controversially approved by Morsy's Islamist allies in December, would be suspended for up to 12 months while a new one was drawn up and put to a referendum, before presidential and parliamentary elections.

This young man was arbitrarily detained with suspect as he is against government and may be terrorist. His only mother had no information where he is and was searching him for the last two years over the country.

South Africa/Ethiopia: Safa Welcomes Fifa Decision On Ethiopia Transgression

Bafana Bafana head coach Gordon Igesund has welcomed the decision from the world football governing body, FIFA regarding the Brazil 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in which it sanctioned the Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) for fielding an ineligible player in their match against Botswana last month. Igesund added that the decision gives South Africa another chance in the competition.

"We welcome the decision, which I believe was expected. It was never in doubt because rules are rules, so in our view it is a correct decision.
"The decision also gives us a second bite on the cherry; we now have to beat Botswana and hope Ethiopia loses or draws against Central African Republic. But I am very pleased with the outcome," said Igesund.
In a statement, FIFA confirmed it has sanctioned the EFF for fielding an ineligible player in the preliminary competition match for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ between Botswana and Ethiopia played in Lobatse on 8 June 2013. Ethiopia won the game 2-1 but the match has now been awarded to Botswana following the FIFA disciplinary committee hearing.
"The match is declared to be forfeited and awarded 3-0 in favour of Botswana, with the EFF also receiving a fine of R60 000 after the FIFA Disciplinary Committee considered the EFF liable for having breached article 55 paragraph 1 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code and article 8 of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ Regulations," read the statement.
"The sanction relates to the Ethiopian player Minyahile Teshome Beyene failing to serve the automatic one-match suspension imposed on him following two cautions received in two different matches (article 17 paragraph 3 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code)."
The decision by FIFA means South Africa still has a chance to proceed to the play-offs of the qualifiers if they beat Botswana in the last game and Ethiopia fails to beat the Central African Republic.
"We accept and welcome the announcement by FIFA," said SAFA CEO Dennis Mumble.
"Regarding our issue where we also wrote to them (FIFA) about the same player featuring in our match having not served his suspension, we were not looking for three points but were just inquiring about the status of the player in the qualifiers.
"We would also like to reiterate our coach's views that there is now much more to play for in the qualifiers as we believe we stand a good chance of proceeding to the next round of play-offs, even though it must be noted that it's no longer in our hands. But we will go there (match against Botswana) and do the best we can, and hope for a favourable result in the other match."
Bafana Bafana are now two points behind Group A leaders Ethiopia with one round of group stages matches remaining. South Africa will have to beat Botswana in September and hope that the Central Africa Republic (CAR) draws against or beats Ethiopia in the other match.

Jawar Mohammed is a hero and a genuine Oromo young leader.

I am pound of him and stand with him all the time. He is targeted by hard core Ethiopianists because he could not denounce his very being; Oromo young man. They are “insulting” him because he could not turn his back on his own people. They wanted him to identify himself with what he is not and cannot be. Their rage and anger against him is the logical extension of their century Oromo-phobia, and in fact is the old evil desires and practices of Abyssinians to kill Oromo personhood within Oromo bodies. Every bad word directed against him should be taken as it is directed against all competent, self-confident young Oromo man who is with clear and unanimous visions and strategies for his people’s struggle.
The historical facts he presented at Aljazeera is neither new nor contested by many Oromo Historians and other independent scholars and researchers. Rather they have been the confirmed and verified historical facts which are still alive in present day Ethiopia. The problems, causes and manifestations he described during that TV show are the main part and parcel of Oromo National narratives which has got widespread acceptance among writers and researchers who have established their profession on Oromo studies. The only “crime” he committed and blamed for is that he could not praise Ethiopians and recite their “national” myths which they thought us as “Ethiopian history” in Ethiopian schools.
I am sure every Oromo would be surprised if hard Core Ethiopianists keep quite or say any good words about people like Jawar or any Oromo leaders at any given time. After all, these groups of Ethiopianists were busy in distributing their fear and contempt about Aljazeera story even before it was aired. What do any reasonable person expects from these people than the rude and unrestrained expressions of their hate and fear that they have developed against Oromo people over a century?

June 29, 2013 (ADDIS ABABA) – The Grand Ethiopia Renaissance Dam (GERD) which is being built on the Blue Nile river will enable neighbouring Sudan to save millions of dollars a year in clearing sedimentation, Ethiopian scholars and researchers have said.
In a high-level symposium held on Friday at Addis Ababa University researchers said Ethiopia’s massive dam, which is just 30km from the Sudanese border, will highly reduce the quantity of silt that accumulates in Sudan, enabling Khartoum to save annually up to $20 million.
Yilma Seleshi a representative from the Ethiopian Water Resource Institute said that the dam will also reduce the frequent floods that affect people and infrastructure on the banks of the Blue Nile.
Khartoum, Sudan’s capital is where the Blue Nile meets the longer but slower moving White Nile that has travelled north through Uganda and South Sudan.
Egypt has expressed concerns over Ethiopia’s dam building programmes but Seleshi said that the GERD will benefit downstream countries in terms of reducing sedimentation and evaporation without diminishing the amount of water that flows to the countries.
Addis Ababa University President, Dr. Admasu Tsegaye, said such symposiums will enable uncertainties, confusion and doubts raised by concerned groups with regard to the dam project to be cleared up.
“It will contribute to creating mutual understanding and trust among upper and lower riparian countries. These two things are decisive to collaboratively work towards reaping shared benefits from the construction of the GERD,” he said.
The symposium titled "Opportunities for Regional Development" brought together over 300 scholars, Ethiopian and foreign researchers, government officials diplomats and representatives from development partners.
Researchers presented some 12 papers on subjects including dam safety, geological hazards, environmental dimensions of the Nile’s water, development and regional integration.
One of the participants, Solomon Belay, who is a hydro-geologist and researcher told Sudan Tribune that hydro-solidarity must be a binding rule between lower and upper riparian countries with regard to Nile water resources.
Citing the recent strong rhetoric by some Egyptian leaders, Belay added that Egypt must end its historical hegemony over the Nile’s water and start to cooperate with others so all riparian countries will have equitable access to the Nile’s water.
Many country’s in the Nile basin argue that a fairer distribution of the Nile’s water would enable them to execute developmental projects that will help lift their people from poverty.
A pre-colonial era treaty has given Egypt 80% of the Nile’s water resources, allowing the North African country a veto against any project by another country.
When asked about concerns large parts of Sudan would be flooded if the Grand Ethiopia Renaissance Dam collapses, another researcher, Girma Abate told Sudan Tribune that the tripartite panel of international experts, which had been assessing on the dam’s impact, have given assurances that the power plant project meets international standards.
He added the construction site - in Ethiopia’s Benshangul Gumuz - is safe from earthquake concerns.
When completed, the $4.8 billion Grand Ethiopia Renaissance Dam will have a power generating capacity of 6000 MW. Ethiopia says the move to harness the river aims to curb poverty by exporting hydro-electricity.
Ethiopia could earn up to 2 million euros a day by selling electricity to neighboring countries.
Currently the East African nation is exporting electricity to Sudan and Djibouti.
After assessing the Nile dam impacts for over a year a panel of international experts recently released its final report concluding that the dam poses no significant harm to downstream countries.
The report revealed that the dam brings benefits to Egypt and Sudan by protecting them from flooding, reducing sedimentation, enabling irrigation expansion, boosting water use efficiency and providing them with cheap and clean energy.
