Aanolee and calanqoo

Aanolee Remembrance Day and Calanqoo Remembrance Day

By Abraasaa Dirree | July 6, 2013
Despite George Santayana’s admonition that those who forget history are condemned to repeat it, we, Oromos, are better forgetters than rememberers.
Holocaust survivor and Nobel Laureate Ellie Wiesel once wrote: “without memory, there is no culture. Without memory, there would be no civilization, no society, no future.” We, Oromos, must heed Ellie Wiesel’s words. We must memorialize the Aanolee and Calanqoo genocides. We must ensure that the Aanolee and Calanqoo victims and lessons are never forgotten. We must commemorate, each year, the thousands of innocent men, women and children massacred at the hands of the Abyssinians during the most heinous chapter in Oromo history – colonization. We must pay tribute to the courage of the Oromo people in that time of gravest peril.
But to honour the victims, it is not enough simply to remember. Truly remembering the Aanolee and Calanqoo genocides must also be an understanding and an undertaking.
On one hand, it is an understanding that we continue to live under occupation – oppressed, exploited, and dehumanized. Although the name “empire” has been removed from the constitution, Ethiopia remains an empire. And the relation of Oromiya to Ethiopia is still colonial. The current Ethiopian government and other Abyssinians forces are using the mantra of Ethiopian unity or one Ethiopia (Ethiopian empire in disguise) to protect ill-gotten gains and privileges enjoyed at the expense of our people.
We see it in in the number of Oromo political prisoners.
We see it the continued harassment of Oromo elders, intellectuals, artists, students and businesses.
We see it in the ethnic cleansing policy of the Ethiopian government. The Ethiopian government purposely arms minority groups and back-stops them through special police force in order to kill and drive Oromos away from their ancestral land.
We see it the land grabbing, without compensation, where Oromo farmers are being driven from their ancestral homes and land they rely on to grow food to eat. The goal is to uproot the thriving Oromo communities and make them landless slave labourers in their own homeland with untold misery and suffering.
We see it in the systematic economic marginalization of Oromos.
We see it in the high level of unemployment among Oromo youth.
We see it in the wanton destruction of Oromiya’s environment – burning forests and destroying the flora and fauna.
We see it in the reckless exploitations of Oromiya’s natural resources with no regards whatsoever for the sustainability and environmental concerns.
We see it in the low quality education deliberately devised for Oromiya region.
We see it in the absence of Oromo students in higher education.
We see it in the continued negative re-branding of Oromos – systematic demonization of anything and everything about Oromo – while they continue to further whitewash their historical wrongs and get mired in mass self-hypnosis to glorify their myths as history.
We see it in everything that has been done to deprive Oromos of any element of power (be it at regional, judicial, municipal, or local levels). Even within the surrogate organizations such as the OPDO, the power base resides with non-Oromo members. Of course, within Oromiya, the coercive machinery of the state is virtually manned by non Oromos.
On the other hand, it is an undertaking of a solemn responsibility to fight for our freedom. Here, the decisive factor to bear in mind is that national liberation movements such as ours are historically and socially progressive forces fighting to end the colonial bondage. So, history is on our side and that is why the Ethiopian colonial policy of suppression and exploitation of Oromos is doomed to defeat, slowly, but surely.
Finally, I would like to call upon all the diaspora Oromo communities, starting 2014, to make Aanolee and Calanqoo Memorial Days realty. Moreover, we need our historians to provide us with vivid accounts/facts about the Aanolee and Calanqoo genocides and tell it the way it should be told so that we can establish fixed date(s) for the annual commemoration and teach the current and future generations to ensure that those memories are never lost. We must use it as source of passion and creative fire to light the Orommummaa flame in each and every Oromo soul in order to re-dedicate and re-strengthen our resolve to free ourselves from the colonial yoke, once and for all.
Oromiya shall be free!

Ali Mohammed Birra

Ali Mohammed Birra: The Voice of an Era

by Mohammed Ademo
alibirraJuly 5, 2013 (OPride) – He has been described as a national icon, a pioneer, a legend, a hero, a doctor, and even the undisputed king of Oromo music. All of these, however, cannot begin to capture the influence his music has had on Oromo identity, culture, and politics. His work and life reflect his pride in, and devotion to, the empowerment of the Oromo people. His uplifting lyrics and eclectic style will continue to inspire for generations to come.
Born on May 26, 1948, Ali Mohammed Musa grew up in Dire Dawa, Eastern Oromia, at a time when, according to Oromo historian Mohammed Hassan, “writing, teaching, preaching and broadcasting in the Oromo language was banned in Ethiopia.” It was also an era where speaking Afan Oromo was ridiculed, and Oromos were still called by derogatory names like Galla and Qottu.
At fourteen, Ali joined a group of youngsters from his neighborhood to form the Hiriyaa Jaalala band. Shortly thereafter, he received an unexpected invitation from the Afran Qallo Band, the first modern Afan Oromo band, to perform before a live audience during the 1963 celebration of Eid al-Fitr. This event forever altered the trajectory of Ali’s life. In his first public musical act, Ali sang “Birraa dhaa Barihe” roughly translated as ‘the break of dawn’ from which he received the much-adored last name: Birra. Though the Afran Qallo Band struggled under the repressive Abyssinian regime which eventually disbanded them, the exposure was irreversibly uplifting and lit an indistinguishable spark in Ali’s heart.
In a forthcoming book, A Fifty Year Journey for the Love of Music and His People, Oromo scholar Mohammed Hassan describes Ali as “a great gift to the Oromo people and to the world of music.”Birra’s extraordinary voice elevated Oromo music to the world stage, raised Oromo national consciousness, and created a space for connection to “home” for those forced into exile. A fluent speaker of Swedish, Arabic, Amharic, Oromo, Harari, English, and Somali languages, Birra is a rare talent who sings in six different world languages – a feat no other Ethiopian singer has achieved.

Criminalisation of Oromo nationals

Jawarawi Harekat Or an Intentional Criminalization Of the Oromo Nationalist?

On February 5, 2013, Ethiopia’s only and publicly funded Television Station, ETV, aired a controversial documentary during prime time in violation of an outstanding court injunction. Oddly subtitled “Boko Haram in Ethiopia”, Jihadawi Harekat – Arabic for “jihadi movement” – denounces leaders of Ethiopia’s year-long protest movement for alleged links to foreign terrorists. That criminalization of the Ethiopian Muslims’ legitimate question of right in excercising their religion without any interference from the government was not surprisingly the first fictious “documentary film” produced by the regime to criminalize civic or political movements in the Ethiopian empire. Similar criminalization of the Oromo national liberation movement (the OLF) was undertaken some years back.
Parallel to such malicious move of the ruling Tigrean elites, recently the nostalgic Amhara elites, who do want to impose an assimilative Ethiopia and Ethiopianism on the Oromo in particular, and on all the other nations and nationalities of the empire in general, also produced and published a “documentary film” with a title “Jawar Mohammed- A Muslim OLF Radical – Ethiopians Out From Oromia” as shown here: . Is this Jawarawi harekat or a criminalization of the young Oromo nationalist, Jawar? What an interesting parallel between both the rival Abyssinian elites of the Amhara and Tigrai, when it comes to the criminalization of any Oromo individual nationalist or any Oromo national liberation organization in order to silence this subjugated nation.
The currently ongoing discussion regarding the controversal Oromo nationalist, Jawar Mohammed, started with the seemingly well thought restructuring of the Oromo hisory by an Ethiopianist Oromo scholar, Dr Fikre Tolassa, who wrote an appeal open letter to one of the ODF (Oromo Democratic Front) leaders, Dr Bayan Asoba (  http://www.gadaa.com/Beyana-Suba-1.pdf ). This new version of the Oromo history and the demands directed to the ODF in order to reverse the use of Qubee (Afaan Oromo alphabet), to adore the Ethiopian flag and to accept Ethiopian nationalism at the cost of Oromian nationalism ignited a series of responses and debates between the two contesting nationalists (Ethiopianists and Oromianists). One of the responses was the suggestion of fostering future common home, Great Oromia, instead of Ethiopia, which I forwarded:http://gadaa.com/oduu/20124/2013/06/06/the-common-home-great-oromia-as-a-win-win-solution-for-the-conflict-between-the-pro-independence-oromo-and-the-pro-unity-amhara/ .
Then followed a well organized campaign and discussion in the Ethiopian as well as the Oromian medias. The explicit intention of the campaign sounded “we want to promote a constructive dialogue between the Ethiopian nationalists and the Oromian nationalists, who do respectively persue two diametrically opposite politcal goals, but have one common enemy, the Woyane, which is now hindering their move”. This debate and discussion was interesting and it was very inviting at the beginning. Gradually some protagonists from the Ethiopianist camp started to put a precondition for the discussion. They started to impose Ethiopia and Ethiopiawinet on the Oromianists, who claim to have Oromia as a country and Oromiummaa as their national identity, at the same time rejecting the demand of owning Ethiopia and Ethiopiawinet.
Even some of the protagonists in the Ethiopian medias started to take side and denigerate Oromia and Oromiummaa to the extent of intimidating the Oromo nationalists, who wanted to assert Oromia as a future independent state, instead of envisioning a united Ethiopia. This conflict lead to a hot discussion in which the Oromo nationalists vehemently rejected Ethiopia as their future land and Ethiopiawinet as their identity. On the contrary they asked the Ethiopianists to arrange for the future common home, Great Oromia (naming the future democratic federal state as Oromia, instead of Ethiopia). Surprisingly this counter attack has driven the Ethiopiansts crazy; they were very angry; they asked “how dare you try to change the name of this holy land given to us from God?” These right extremist Ethiopianists even strated to ”intimidate” the Oromo nationalists in the discussion forums. The intended dialogue between the Amhara and the Oromo at the paltalk level changed into the confrontation between the two groups. Of course the Woyane agents and cadres enjoyed this conflict and as usual poured a kerosine on the fire.
It was amidst this circumstance that the journalist in Aljazira asked Jawar Mohammed a very good question: “are you Oromo first or Ethiopian first”? http://stream.aljazeera.com/story/201306102025-0022818 . The answer to the question was cristal clear: “I am Oromo first; Ethiopian identity is imposed on me” This reply from Jawar made the already crazy Ethiopianists to take off their cloth and declare a cyber war against him. They decided to invite him to an interview and persuade him to apologize. They did as they planned and the answer they got in the interview was not what they expected, but the re-assertion of his firm position regarding Oromia and Oromiummaa. What a liberating stand from Jawar! Oromo nationals were proud of him; Ethiopianists were more mad at him. They started a charachter assasination, criminalization, denigeration and even went to the extent of collecting a petition against him.
Jawar, who was once seen as a young moderate intellectual and was respected by the Ethiopianists as he first started to criticize the OLF and spoke for the possible union of autonomous nations in the Ethiopian context as a better alternative to an independent republic of Oromia, is now regarded as “a naive young Oromo, who doesn’t have experinece and insight” when it comes to the deep political problems in the empire. Overnight, the Ethiopianists changed him from an angel to a devil; they talked and wrote all negative things about him; the highlight being the video clip presented as a “documentary: Jawarawi Harekat” as I mentioned above. The malicious campaign against this brilliant Oromo talent is still going on.
But, is this approach of the Ethiopianst elites regarding the Oromo nationals a new phenomen? Didn’t they, throughout their history, adore and use Oromo talents as long as the Oromo nationals served their institutions and their interest, just to discard the servants, when they think the serevants are no more working for them? Was it not like this during Minilk, H/Sillasie, Mengistu and even Meles era? Are they not still seaking Oromo talents, whom they want to use? To have a look about Oromo talents in Habesha political club, read more: http://www.ethiopianreview.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=24770 . Here we can see, how the Abyssinians got profit from the politcal game by the Oromo professionals, but played in the club of and for the interest of the ruling Habesha elites. Then, is it surprisng when they wanted to use the modern day Oromo talents like Birtukan Midhagsa, Jawar Mohammed….etc and get disappointed by facing the reality that these talents are not “their loyal servants” as they expectred?
I think the era of getting Oromo political talents playing for Habesha club is slowly, but surely, dwindling. The Oromo are getting enough insight that Abyssinian nationalism, being masked with Ethiopiawinet, is the anti-thesis of Oromian nationalism (Oromiummaa). The two nationalisms are competing to win the hearts and minds of the Oromo nationals. That is what nowadays going on in a very intensified form. The Abyssinian elites seem to have waged a coordinated campaign against Oromia and Oromiummaa. To be effective, they are using few Oromo natioanls with the Ethiopianist mentality as we hear in the following audio record: http://www.zehabesha.com/ethiopian-oromos-responded-angrily-to-jawar-mohammed-poisonous-statement/ . Is this using an Oromo against another Oromo something new? When we see at the recent history of the Oromo subjugation and the hitherto rule by Abyssinian elites, there was no regime in the empire, who could win the struggle against the Oromo without using such Oromo collaborators. The same phenomena is still going on.
What ever the Abyssinian elites do try, the Oromo national liberation struggle is slowly, but surely, getting momentum; more and more Oromo are becoming assertive and radical to push for free Oromo people and an independent Oromia. The least and minimum demand of the Oromo is self-rule of the Oromian state within a true Ethiopian union/federation; the main objective being an independent republic of core Oromia; of course the best option is an independent Great Oromia or the transformation of the Ethiopian empire towards the Oromian union. There is nothing less than converting Ethiopia into this Great Oromia, which can be a guarantee for the unity and the territorial integrity seeked by the Abyssinain elites. Now the case of Jawar is an interesting phenomen, in which the foes and the friends of the Oromo national liberation movement are clearly seen and separated. The foes are still doing their best to criminalize Jawar and the friends are united more than ever to show a solidarity to his clear position on Oromia and Oromiumma. All Oromo nationalists are now singing together the same song of ‘no compromise on Oromia and Oromiummaa’. That is why I dared to ask: Jawarawi harekat or an intentional criminalization of the Oromo nationalist? I think for the Oromo national liberation camp, it is the harekat, whereas in the Abyssinian camp the usual criminalizazion of the genuine Oromo nationalists is going on. Jawar can capitalize on the support he got and play the card smartly to lead the harekat towards a success. May Rabbi/Waaqa help us use this harekat for the intensification of the Oromo national liberation struggle.

July 4, 2013 (AP) — The Ethiopian government is set to increase defense spending by more than 15 percent, a rise that comes amid tensions with Egypt over the building of a new dam on the Nile River.
Cairo says the Ethiopian dam project, set to become Africa’s largest, could diminish its share of Nile River waters, which provides almost all of the desert nation’s water needs.
Ethiopia’s parliament on Wednesday debated the proposed budget, which would increase defense spending to $400 million, up from about $350 million. The parliament is scheduled to approve the budget on Thursday.
Getachew Reda, a spokesman for Hailemariam, insists the defense increase has nothing to do with the recent disputes with Egypt. Getachew told The Associated Press the increase corresponds to the country’s growing economy.
Ethiopia to purchase 18 SU-30K Fighter Jets from Russia
18 Su-30K fighter jets that India returned to Russia, probably will not be sold to Vietnam, but instead may be heading to Ethiopia. Deputy Group Director arms exporter Rosoboronexport[Рособоронэкспорта] Alexander Mikheyev said that Russia is negotiating to supply 18 Su-30K fighters to Ethiopia.
Eighteen multipurpose fighters were returned to India to replace the Russian fighter Su-30MKI is newer.
“We are in consultation with Ethiopia for the supply of the fighter. They have proposed a variant to modernize, enhance combat capability as well as the specification and provide additional tactics the rocket – to – land/sea more advanced,” said Mikheyev said.
The Rosoboronexport officials also stressed that, at present, four Su-30K first being repaired at a local aircraft factory.
“Just got the proposal from customers and financial resources, we are ready to upgrade and modernize all 18 Su-30K aircraft within 4-6 months,” he said Mikheyev.
Complete 18 Su-30K aircraft the IAF was not used in 10 years time, then returned to Russia. This aircraft was delivered to some 5 factories in Belarus to repair and upgrade, before being sold to 3rd party without giving back to Russia to avoid import taxes.
There has been much speculation about the fate of 18 Su-30K and its destination. There has been news that Belarus wants to buy the whole lot and that Russian planes do not extend credit to them (Belarus) to purchase the Group’s Irkut aircraft, then, a few other sources revealed that customer Nan is Vietnam after Vietnam military mission sent to check out a few planes.
Since then, no further information about the fate of this 18 Su-30K. However, the recent disclosure of Rosoboronexport Deputy Director General that Vietnam will not be a customer of 18 Su-30K aircraft, may be negotiated by the two parties, but does not meet requirements of each other, or maybe, Vietnam will not buy old planes instead is buying new aircraft Su-30 at a point.

Morsy toppled

Egypt army topples Morsy

The Egyptian army toppled Islamist President Mohamed Morsy on Wednesday after a week of bloodshed that killed nearly 50 people as millions took to the streets to demand an end to his turbulent single year of rule.
The announcement, made on state television by Morsy's own defence minister, armed forces chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, drew a rapturous welcome from the protesters who have camped out on the streets of Cairo for days.
Sisi also announced a freezing of the Islamist-drafted constitution and early presidential elections.
Thousands of people immediately took to the streets of the capital to celebrate, cheering, whistling, letting off firecrackers, and honking car horns in joyous scenes.
But Morsy's office rejected the move as "illegal" and called on Egyptians to peacefully resist the "coup".
Morsy, Egypt's first freely elected president, came under massive pressure in the run-up to Sunday's anniversary of his maiden year in office, with his opponents accusing him of failing the 2011 revolution by concentrating power in Islamist hands.
The embattled 62-year-old proposed a "consensus government" as a way out of the country's worst crisis since the 2011 uprising ended three decades of authoritarian rule by Hosni Mubarak.
But the United States urged Morsy to "do more" as a military deadline passed for him to meet the demands of the people following a week of bloody unrest during mass protests calling for him to quit.
The advice came too late, however, as the army said the head of the Supreme Constitutional Court, Adly al-Mansour, a previously little known judge, would become the new leader of the Arab world's most populous country.
Opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei, the UN nuclear watchdog chief, and the heads of the Coptic Church and Al-Azhar, Sunni Islam's highest seat of learning, sat alongside the armed forces chief as he announced Morsy's overthrow on state television.
The choreography was designed to show broad civilian support for the military's move to topple Morsy, Egypt's first freely elected leader, dashing the hopes of supporters who had seen his elevation to the presidency after years underground as one of the key achievements of the 2011 revolution.
Morsy's camp had earlier denounced the army's intervention as a coup.
"For the sake of Egypt and for historical accuracy, let's call what is happening by its real name: military coup," Essam al-Haddad, Morsy's national security adviser, said in a statement on Facebook.
As tension mounted and crowds poured onto the streets to demand Morsy's resignation, Haddad said: "As I write these lines I am fully aware that these may be the last lines I get to post on this page."
AFP correspondents reported seeing dozens of armoured personnel carriers heading towards Islamist gatherings at Cairo University, Heliopolis and Nasr City.
But in Cairo's Tahrir Square, the security forces looked on as tens of thousands of anti-Morsy protesters rallied in a demonstration that dwarfed that of the embattled president's supporters in Nasr City, on the opposite side of town.
"Come here O Sisi, Morsy isn't my president," the flag-waving protesters chanted in the square, referring to the army chief.
The crowd swelled at nightfall, after a scorching day that saw police officers hand out water to the demonstrators in the middle of Tahrir, epicentre of the 2011 uprising that ended three decades of authoritarian rule by Hosni Mubarak.
The powerful military had issued a 48-hour deadline on Monday for Morsy to meet the "people's demands", a day after millions of protesters took to the streets across the troubled country calling for him to resign.
Thousands of people also gathered in Nasr City in a show of support for Morsy, despite an attack that killed 16 of them and injured 200 overnight.
That spate of bloodletting took to almost 50 the number of people killed in Egypt since the latest crisis flared a week ago ahead of Sunday's anniversary of Morsy's swearing-in.
Opponents accuse Morsy of having betrayed the revolution by concentrating power in Islamist hands and of sending the economy into freefall. His supporters said he inherited many problems, and that he should be allowed to see out his mandate, which had been supposed to run until 2016.
In a late night speech on Tuesday, a defiant Morsy said he had been freely elected more than a year ago and intended to carry on his duties. The only alternative was more bloodshed.
Upping the stakes, senior armed forces commanders meeting on Wednesday swore to defend Egypt with their lives, a source close to the military told AFP.
"We swear to God that we will sacrifice our blood for Egypt and its people against all terrorists, extremists and the ignorant," they declared in an oath led by General Sisi, the source said.
Egypt's press had predicted Wednesday would be the day of Morsy's departure.
"Today: Ouster or Resignation," splashed the state-owned mass circulation Al-Ahram newspaper. "The End," declared the independent Al-Watan.
Aside from Tahrir, Nasr City and a few other areas, Cairo's streets were unusually quiet, with many choosing to stay home over fears of more violence. "The Islamists declared war on the rest of the population yesterday. I'm very scared," said resident Soha Abdelrahman.
All eyes were on the military, after Al-Ahram reported details of the its roadmap for the future.
The plan provides for an interim administration, of up to one year, which would include the head of the supreme constitutional court and a senior army figure.
The constitution, controversially approved by Morsy's Islamist allies in December, would be suspended for up to 12 months while a new one was drawn up and put to a referendum, before presidential and parliamentary elections.
