The Truth, a few Extremist Amhara Diaspora and media couldn’t live with

By Nadhii Gamadda (PhD) | July 18, 2013
After I listened to Aljazeera’s The Stream program ad on the Oromo causes, I told my good friend as these will bring great pain and suffering to some extremist Amhara in Diaspora and their media. As I said, in the last two weeks we witnessed the unfolding and concerted campaign of these extremist groups and their affiliated media against Jawar and us, the 40 plus millions of Oromo people. I was amused by the sheer number of articles and videos they produced and posted on their blogs and websites. What drives these people nuts? Why they picked on Jawar? What would the answer be if tens of millions of Oromo youth and farmers asked the same question? Do we answer it differently?  Why we don’t feel Ethiopian?  By insulting the great people and person of the continent of African in general and the horn region in particular what on earth these people want to achieve?
Before I entertain these questions, let me say a few things why I refer to the websites they used to wages propaganda war on us, Amahara media. The little known websites like Zehabesha, Quatero and Cyberethiopia have one common and collective agenda. Reviving Etheiopiawinet and bringing back the dead, rotten and outdated Amhara hegemony, of one nation, one religion and one language. That rotten and outdated thinking has no place in  that Empire, except in their mind and websites. When they reported the displacement of their Amhara villagers from Guraferda and Benishangul, they didn’t say a word about the death and displacement of thousands of Oromos by TPLF armed and supported Somali region militia. For them Amhara means Ethiopia, for us Ethiopia means Amhara.  So what do we have in common the? Nothing!
I have never seen and heard when the late Melese and his TPLF people questioned their Ethiopian heritage. They always believe that they are Ethiopian, but they see and define Ethiopia and Ethiopiawinet differently. The extremist Amhara and their affiliate websites labeled them the enemy of Ethiopia. Why? Because they are Tigre not Amhara. Look what they are doing to Dawit Kebed of Awramba times.
If you are Oromo and you do not have Ethiopian blood in you and their Ethiopia and Ethiopiawinet is alien concept to you and you know as you are Oromo and your Oromumma comes second to none, you are not only their enemy but also you are Muslim extremist, OLF cadre, Egypt agent and the list goes on.
Jawar has the right and capacity to speak for himself. He doesn’t need anyone else’s approval. I read most of the articles they posted on their websites. None of them were forceful and assertive to rebuke Jawar’s assertion. If they are not happy on what he said, is that a way they put their disappointment or difference? I love and appreciate if they awaken by Jawar’s call and assertion and find out the truth and asked themselves, whether this is an isolated incident or widespread views and belief among the Oromos. If Aljazeera asked the same question to tens of millions of Oromo youth and farmers, I am pretty sure they will get exactly what Jawar said.
All the articles and videos posted on this issue are full of hates. They are all intended to impose their Ethiopian and Ethiopiawinet view on Jawar and the Oromo people. They want to do it the way their ancestors did in the 19th century. That was exactly what Jawar said. They didn’t ask why he say this? What went wrong? Is this an isolated incident or wide spread views and beliefs among the wider Oromos? They don’t have time for such rational and sage thinking. They are exactly their fathers’ sons and daughters.  They engaged in the politics of denial. They want to achieve their political interest through denying facts and the truth.
Sadly, these people are shameless. When they shamelessly defended the rights of their slut who had sex in public and tried to re-define what Ethiopia mean and the right of individual should be,   they insulted and disrespected our scholars and political scientist for speaking up the truth and reflecting the very feelings of 40 plus million Oromos.
Although most of these people are living along side sophisticated society in democratic country, they couldn’t catch up with the systems and society they are living with. I have never seen any person or editor who is bold enough to take this matter one step further and call for dialog to find out what has happened, then what we need to do now and in the future. They rather engaged in cheap, uncivilized and barbaric means, insult.
Barrage of insults and empty rhetoric wouldn’t change the truth or the course of justices or bring us closer. When VOA decided to broadcast Afaan Oromo, they accused VOA us conspiracy to weaken Ethiopia and destroy national unity. Now they turned to Aljazeera. Interestingly, these people accused Aljazeera journalist of incompetency. Isn’t it funny and weird? If gathering petitions, demonstration could change the truth and course of justice, they would have changed the independence of Eritrea, VOA Afaan Oromo program and the incumbent regime in Finfinne.
Sadly, the people of that country has never been united. Thus why we don’t believe and share the same national identity, patriotism, sentiment, flag and history. Our Oromumma is different from their Ethiopiawinet, our sophisticated socio-economic and political system of Gadaa is different and far beyond the reach of their oppressive Gebar Feudal system, Kebra and Fetha Negest. Our Alaba is different from their ‘moa-anbesa’ flag. We have diverse and rich culture of tolerance, trust and solving depute through dialog. They have a culture of mistrust and poisoning their rivals. Thus, why we noticed them when they taste or sip anything they give it to you, to say that look I didn’t poison it. Poisoning and killing your rival is foreign to Oromo. It is equally unknown and unthinkable to sip someone’s full drink. Thanks to Waaqa we have free from such evil things.
Why they picked on Jawar and targeted him? A few years ago Jawar wrote critical analysis about OLF leadership. In that analysis Jawar raised many internal and external factors that contributed for the then OLF internal conflict. His article was critical of OLF leaders not OLF objectives and goals. They thought that Jawar has anti OLF stand. With their shallow thinking and succinct analysis, they believed that, Jawar might play for their team and they fallen in love of his articles and they kept posting them on their websites.  They made him their darling political analyst and applauded him with all possible terms they could.  They called him a rising star and far sighted young talented and gifted Oromo elite. No doubt about that, indeed he is. His popularity among leftist Amhara media went viral, mainly because his analysis focused on the organization they always wished to see divided and weakened, OLF.  Fortunately OLF didn’t disappear as they wished and dreamed about. Amicably, it bounced back and shattered their hope. Why the very people who applauded him yesterday insulted him today? While Jawar was the same person back then and now, they woke up from their deep sleep when he said I am Oromo first and Ethiopia is imposed on me. They thought that Jawar was changed and continued attacking him their fathers’ way. Sadly, they haven’t learned any other way ever since.
As he continue appearing on international media on Ethiopian issue, he clearly and unambiguously asserted the socio-economic and political questions of Oromo people to them and the international communities. The abomination comes after they learned that Jawar is a person of conviction, who is proud of his root and Oromumma.  After they learned that they can’t dictate him and he is not the kind of person they can freely ride him as far as they want,  they  started pulling hairs and waged propaganda war ostensibly on him and actually on all of us who share Jawar’s view.
Let me make one thing crystal clear to friends and foes. Leave Jawar alone. Tens of millions of us, the Oromos,  share Jawars view. In our everyday life we tell people we met, we work and study with as we  are Oromos not Ethiopia.  I want to tell you loudly and clearly that I am born Oromo and I am Oromo first, and my Oromumma comes second to none. Period.  Nothing else.  I am proud Oromo and proud of my country and the struggle and scarifies our ancestors paid to pass on this great culture, language and most importantly the pride of being Oromo, Oromumma.
Oromo is in my blood and flesh.  Oromumma is my identity and it is not limited to being  born from Oromo family or tracing once ancestral root in Oromo family or name .  It is far beyond that. It is my way of life, the foundation and guiding principle of my life, destination, principle, values and wisdom that explain and define who I am, what I stand for, who I stand with and aligned my struggle with, what I do and contribute in promoting and achieving the just cause of Oromo people, what vision and mission I have for my people and what I have done to achieve these novel and just cause.  It is a guiding spirit and ideology millions of Oromo paid the ultimate price for from the period of genocidal Minilik II to this date.
Finally I want to tell them that I am Oromo First, and my Oromomumma comes second to none! Period.

Ethiopia: The Continuing of Deaths and Displacements in Eastern Oromia

HRLHA Fine

HRLHA Urgent Action
July 16, 2013
Public: for immediate Release
In a development relating to HRLHA URGENT ACTION, May 7, 2013, ” Ethiopia: Loss of Lives and Displacement Due to Border Dispute  in Eastern Ethiopia”
HRLHA has learnt that three innocent civilians have been killed and two others wounded in eastern Oromia’s Regional State, in Ethiopia in a violence that involved the Federal Government’s special force known as LIYYU POLICE. According to HRLHA informants, the three dead victims of this most recent attack by the federal Liyyu Police/Special Police that took place in the early morning of July 7, 2013 in the Gaara-Wallo area in Qumbi District of Eastern Hararge Province in Eastern Ethiopia were:
  1. Mr. Ibrahim Henno, 38,
  2. Mr. Mahammed Musa, 26
  3. Mr. Mohammed Yusuf , 27
The two wounded victims of this same violent action were Mr. Nuredin Ismael (age 25) and Mr. Ali Mohammed (age 27). HRLHA has confirmed that both Mr. Nuredin and Mr. Ali have since been being treated at the Hiwot Fana Hospital in the city of Harar. More shocking was that the bodies of the three dead victims were eaten by hyenas, because there was nobody around to pick and burry; as the whole village was deserted when the villagers were forced by the armed federal forces to leave the area. According to HRLHA correspondents and other sources, the forced eviction has been taking place in the name of alleged border dispute between the two neighbouring states of Oromia and Ogaden; although the Ogadenis have reiterated that they have not made a land claim along the border. The victims claim that the forced displacements that have been going on for over eight months were always accompanied by dispossessions, lootings, and confiscations of properties.
The Human Rights League of the Horn of Africa once again urges the Ethiopian Federal Government and the Regional Government of Oromia to discharge their responsibilities of ensuring the safety and stability of citizens by taking immediate actions of interference to bring the violence to end, and facilitate the return of the displaced Oromos back to their homes. It also calls upon all local, regional and international diplomatic and human rights organizations to impose necessary pressures on both the federal and regional governments so that they refrain from committing irresponsible actions against their own citizens for the purpose of political gains
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
  • Please send appeals to the Ethiopian Government and its concerned officials as swiftly as possible, in English or Amharic, mentioning to refrain from committing irresponsible actions against their own citizens
  • to bring to justice those members  of “LIYYU POLICE”  Police who committed crimes against innocent civilians

The Oromo and the War on Terror in the Horn of Africa

The Oromo and other long-suffering communities do not want independence but to be treated as citizens of the state.
There are 30 million Oromo in Ethiopia, making them the largest ethnic group in the country [Leyland Cecco/Al Jazeera]
There are 30 million Oromo in Ethiopia, making them the largest ethnic group in the country [Leyland Cecco/Al Jazeera]
July 16, 2013 (Aljazeera) — In August 2011, Bekele Gerba, an English teacher at Addis Ababa University and prominent politician, met with a delegation from Amnesty International to discuss the human rights situation in Ethiopia. Gerba, a vocal activist on behalf of his largely Muslim Oromo people, was deputy chairman of the opposition party Oromo Federalist Democratic Movement (OFDM) and a member of the executive committee of Medrek, the country’s main opposition coalition.
To the Ethiopian government, however, Gerba was a terrorist. Four days after the meeting, he was arrested. In November 2012 Gerba was convicted and imprisoned under Ethiopia’s 2009 Anti-Terrorism Proclamation for association with the banned Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), which the government has asserted is linked with al-Qaeda affiliated entities.
According to organisations like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, however, Gerba was guilty of being Oromo and talking of the plight of his people. Shortly before his arrest, Gerba had described the challenges facing his community, telling Voice of America “Anyone who speaks the [Oromo] language and does not belong to the ruling party is a suspect and can be taken to prison any time.” Gerba and other incarcerated Oromo (Oromo rights groups estimate there are around 20,000 Oromo political prisoners in Ethiopia) continue to spark protests in Ethiopia and across the global Oromo diaspora.
Who are the Oromo?
Readers might be forgiven for asking who the Oromo are and why they are important. It is, however, impossible to understand Ethiopia – which is Africa’s second most populous country, a key US ally in the war on terror, the recipient of billions of dollars in western aid, and one of the world’s fastest growing economies – without knowing something of the Oromo.
In order to improve the situation…each side must view the other through its own culture with respect, and involve tribal elders who can help make peace…the military is not a solution, there has to be political accommodation.
Ermias Sahle Selassie, the grandson of Emperor Haile Selassie
With a population of around 30 million in Ethiopia and also extending into Kenya, the Oromo are Ethiopia’s largest ethnic group and their language is the fourth most spoken in Africa. Yet the Oromo are an invisible ethnicity in the eyes of the world. To comprehend the Oromo, their relationship with the Ethiopian central government, and how they have become involved in the war on terror, we must look at Oromo history.
Prior to incorporation into the modern state of Ethiopia, the Oromo, split into various clans tracing descent to a common ancestor named Orma, had lived for centuries as independent people under their indigenous system of law, known as Gadaa, which was administered by councils of elders. In various places the Oromo also had their own kingdoms. Oromo areas contained prominent Islamic centers, such as the shrine of the Sufi Sheikh Hussein in the Bale region, one of the most important in the Horn of Africa.
In the nineteenth century, the Amhara people, who considered themselves the successor to the ancient Christian kingdom of Aksum with roots going back 2,000 years, attempted to consolidate their rule over other ethnic groups including the Oromo, who were concentrated in the country’s south. The Amhara believed they were restoring a mythological “greater Ethiopia” that existed prior to Oromo invasion.
The Amhara under emperors like Menelik II utilised modern weapons and European advisors against their opponents, who fought with spears. The result was devastation and death on an enormous scale. Between 1868 and 1900, half of all Oromo were killed, around 5 million people. The tactics employed were brutal. Following the defeat of the Oromo Arsi tribe of the Bale region, for example, Menelik’s general had the right hands of all strong men cut off and tied to their necks, and the breasts of the women sliced off and similarly worn.
Hundreds of thousands of settlers, known as naftanya, meaning gun carrier, were dispatched by the Amhara government into fortified settlements in the Oromo areas. The settlers seized vast tracts of Oromo lands, on which the Oromo were forced to labour. Oromo place names were changed to Amharic and local language and culture were banned. Under the famous emperor Haile Selassie, who took power in 1930, Oromo lands were given to multinational corporations, expelling and decimating local populations. The Oromo were known by the derogatory name Galla, or lowly “outsiders.”
The Oromo rose in frequent rebellions, the largest of which broke out in Bale in the 1960s and resulted in the deaths of close to half a million people. Bale rebels would play an important role in forming the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), which began a campaign that has continued to the present time.
The overthrow of Emperor Haile Selassie and the establishment of the Marxist government known as the Derg in 1974 brought further suffering for the Oromo. In the late 1970s the government began resettling mass numbers of people from the north in the Oromo region. By the mid-1980s this programme had led to a famine that resulted in the deaths of over one million people, shocking the world. During a “villagisation” programme in the same period, around eight million Oromo were moved into what were effectively concentration camps run by the military.
The fall of the Marxists following a guerilla campaign by the Oromo and other ethnic groups in 1991 brought relief, and there was hope that Ethiopia was entering an era of democracy and pluralism.
Yet the nation’s new rulers, based in the Christian Tigray people, who also considered themselves ethnic successors to Aksum, continued the center’s policy toward the Oromo. From 1992 to 1994, for example, as many as 50,000 Oromo suspected of ties with the OLF were imprisoned in four concentration camps and 3,000 died. Additionally, it is estimated that between 1992 and 2001 50,000 Oromo were killed and 16,000 “disappeared,” a euphemism for secret killing. During the 1998-2000 war with Eritrea, Oromo were drafted to fight and died in large numbers, making up the majority of the more than 100,000 Ethiopian soldiers killed.
American involvement
The September 11 attacks brought increased American involvement in the Horn of Africa and an alliance with Ethiopia against “terrorism”. In late 2006 the US, which had begun training the Ethiopian army three years earlier, backed Ethiopia’s invasion of neighbouring Somalia. Ethiopia sought to firmly align its domestic opponents with the US war against al-Qaeda, with Ethiopia’s intelligence chief, in documents released by Wikileaks, telling the US ambassador in 2009 that the OLF is an accomplice of “international terrorist groups” and receives “support and assistance” from terrorist enemies of the US. Ethiopia joined a regional “rendition” network, with US agents interrogating terror suspects in Ethiopian prisons.
Ethiopia’s lack of democratic transparency was not a barrier to US aid, with the country receiving over $2bn in the two years following national elections in 2010 that saw the ruling party win 99.6 per cent of parliamentary seats. In August 2011 the BBC reported that the government was using billions of dollars of such foreign aid to systematically starve populations in the country’s south and employing tactics of “mass detentions…torture and extra-judicial killings.” Two months after the report aired, it was revealed that the US was flying drone missions from its base in Arba Minch in southern Ethiopia, just adjacent to the Oromia region.
The Anti-Terrorism Proclamation was commonly invoked in 2011 as the government launched a crackdown on scores of politicians, journalists, bloggers, and others among the Oromo and other groups. It was also invoked in the arrests of prominent Muslim leaders the following year, who began to clash with the central government over government attempts to control the practice of Islam and appoint its own approved Muslim leaders.
In April 2012 Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi told parliament that al-Qaeda was operating in the Oromo Arsi and Bale provinces. Ten days later security forces in Arsi arrested an imam the government claimed was attempting to “instigate jihad,” resulting in the deaths of four people.
The August 2012 appointment of Hailemariam Desalegn, a Christian of the southern Wolayta people, as Prime Minister following the death of Zenawi led to hopes of greater democracy and inclusion. Yet the government structure and mentality seems to have remained in place. In February 2013, for example, state television aired a documentary co-produced by the National Security Agency and Federal Police entitledJihadawi Harekat or “jihadi movement” which accused the protesting Ethiopian Muslims of links with foreign terrorists.
Ermias Sahle Selassie weighs in
Given the seriousness of the problem, what is to be done? To help us understand the situation in Ethiopia, we met with His Imperial Highness Ermias Sahle Selassie, the grandson of Emperor Haile Selassie, in Washington, D.C. last year. A sophisticated and thoughtful man, he told us that the Ethiopian government officially sanctions his title and allows him to return when he chooses. Prince Ermias, who is of Amhara and Oromo descent, lamented that the once “harmonious relations” between Christian Ethiopians and Muslim tribes are “breaking down”.
In order to improve the situation, he explained, each side must view the other through its own culture with respect, and involve tribal elders who can help make peace. On the subject of the war on terror in the region, Prince Ermias said that “the military is not a solution, there has to be political accommodation”.
His Imperial Highness’ sensible and practical steps give us an idea how to move forward. In order to bring stability and harmony to the nation, the central government must extend full civil and human rights, economic development, democratic representation, and freedom of language and expression to the Oromo as well as all Ethiopians.
A true modern, democratic, federal system would allow Ethiopia’s various ethnicities and regions to shape their own destiny while remaining part of the Ethiopian family, helping to alleviate the conditions that have caused some to turn to violence. The Oromo and other long-suffering communities largely do not want independence but to be treated as citizens of the state with equal rights.
Yet this future can only be achieved if the Ethiopian centre ceases portraying the Oromo and others who are demanding rights and freedoms as terrorists. Supporters of Ethiopia like the US need to understand what is happening and take proactive steps to alter the way the war on terrorism is being conceived and waged. Unless the situation changes, the Oromo, like so many other Muslim tribal societies across the world, are in danger of becoming a casualty of this global campaign.

Ethiopia: A Work of Unskilled Carpenters and Dentists

By Baran Bahan | July 16, 2013
I love and respect carpentry and dentistry as much as I do love and respect all other disciplines and professions. I know that both carpenters and dentists do amazing things for us in their respective professions. However, trying to apply the rules and principles of carpentry and dentistry to other fields, especially politics, is not only counterproductive, but also a dangerous one. Unfortunately, that is exactly what happened to Ethiopia since the establishment of the empire.
The unfinished Ethiopian empire building started around hundred and thirty years ago when Minilik captured territories far larger than he had when he was a local warlord. Haile Sellasie later annexed Eritrea to the one he inherited from him. Then, Mengistu Haile Mariam fought seventeen years to keep the so called “mother land” intact. The current regime already lost Eritrea, and is soon to lose even more territories such as Ogaden and Oromia. The rulers of the empire for more than a century engaged in the work of carpentry and dentistry that involved cutting, nailing and hammering, uprooting, removing and shaking all along the way.
The act of carpentry and dentistry started when the invader warlord Minilik from the north, motivated by economic needs, moved south ward to loot the wealth and resources of Oromia and other nations. After many lootings, this warlord realized that the new nations had more wealth and resources than he had ever imagined and, hence, decided to put the whole region under his control with the weaponry and training he received from the west. Like a learner carpenter who carelessly uses his/her tools to cut woods and hammer and nail them together, the terrorist Minilik and his thugs used their firearms, knives and whatever they had at their disposal and brutally massacred, dismembered, disfigured, amputated and made fun of human beings. The “visionary king” mercilessly shattered the bones of human beings, let their bloods flow, and committed unforgettable genocide. Like a careless dentist, who extracts a healthy tooth and replaces it with the fake one, the Habeshas also displaced the Oromos, Wolaitas, Kambatas, Somalis and, etc from their lands and resettled their own people. They further imposed their language, culture and religion on indigenous people and made a terrible ethnocide.
It is really weird to hear that the Habeshas today are trying to tell us that his motive was to “unify the country”. Why didn’t he seek unity with other warlords such as Takle Haimanot and Yohannes?
Haile Sellasie also did the same criminal act of uprooting the indigenous people. To justify the impunity of his criminal act and atrocity, he told his subjects that he was ‘named by God’ to rule Ethiopia. The feeble “king”, however, did not say a word if the same God who named him as “king of Ethiopia” also told him to flee the country when Italians invaded. What on earth can explain his decision to annex Eritrea, a free county that had to latter fight for more than thirty years to get independence, more than his stupidity and political immaturity? The “wise king” was ironically failed to understand even the “land to the tiller” simple logic that school kids lectured him on the street of the capital and other cities.
Mengistu Haile Mariam, who came to power behind tank, also turned out to be the worst carpenter who thinks that a hammer and a nail are the only tools that can fix everything. He killed an estimated two million people during his seventeen years reign. Today, more than seventy countries in the world have population less than two million, less than the number of people he killed in civil war and different color terrors. It is, however, sad that even today he has no any contrition when he says he did everything “in the interest of the country” to defend the country against “secessionists”. Like Halie Sellasie did, he also fled the country to save his own life when he realized that his life was at risk.
As if the empire was cursed by God, woyyanes are no different today. They killed tens of thousands in a meaningless war with Eritrea. They sent our kids to Somalia and made the whole world watch them being dragged in the streets. The brutal and extrajudicial killings of innocent people have continued nonstop. As the derg labeled the victims “antirevolutionary” and “secessionists”, the woyyanes also found new tags for the people they kill and incarcerate at will: “terrorists” and “Shabia mercenaries”. They violate their own constitution and accuse others of violating it. They jail people both for speaking and not speaking.
The answer for hundreds of questions regarding why the Habesha rulers continue to apply the rules and principles of carpentry and dentistry to politics and kill and suppress the Oromos and people of other nations is clear and simple: they think that they cannot rule without it, a mark of pure ignorance and stupidity. Of course, they cannot rule because democracy always favors the majority.
It is odd that the Habeshas today praise those terrible carpenters and dentists. Close-to-god honorific title such as “His Majesty,” the feminine love name such as “Immiyye,” and “visionary” they use to describe the monsters are nothing but a vain attempt to delude others. They are making terrible mistakes if they think that their “golden past” will come again. The light should be for all, or else for none! They should stop deafening us with their fake stories of civilization. What else can better describe their claims to have territories in Jerusalem, Eritrea, Djibouti, Yemen, and Sudan than a pure delusion?
Finally, I want them to understand that our history is stronger and deeper than the one they learned through short story telling at night around fire, and that our victory and the victory of all the oppressed people is very soon.
Victory for the Oppressed!
