Ethiopia urges Sudan and Egypt to implement panel’s report on Nile dam

By Tesfa-Alem Tekle
September 18, 2013 (ADDIS ABABA) - The Ethiopian government on Tuesday urged Sudan and Egypt to implement the final study report presented by the international panel of experts that was established to assess the impact of Ethiopia’s giant Nile dam project on downstream countries.

Ethiopia cited the findings of the report issued last June as showing that the $4.7 billion Grand Renaissance dam will not have any significant effect on lower riparian countries of Egypt and Sudan.
“Ethiopia accepts the report and stresses the need for Egypt and Sudan to do so,” spokesperson for the ministry of foreign affairs ambassador Dina Mufti said.
Cairo says the construction of the massive hydro-electric dam project will diminish its water share, becoming its prime water security concern.
Addis Ababa however argues the dam project will regulate the flow of water avoiding flooding, reduce siltation and will allow provision of clean and cheap energy to Sudan and Egypt.
"Construction of the dam is underway taking into consideration the benefits of lower riparian countries” Mufti added.
The official dismissed some reports from Egyptian outlets and government officials who are labeling the project as a major threat to Egypt’s safety and security.
He said the reports are inappropriate and misleading.
An official told Sudan Tribune that nearly 30% of construction of the multi-billion power project is completed.
When the dam project - which will have power generation capacity of 6,000 MW - goes operational, the horn of Africa’s nation projects it will generate up to 2 million Euros per day from exporting hydro-electricity.
Although Ethiopia is a source to 85% of the Nile’s water resources, a colonial era treaty, however, has allowed Egypt to utilize the lion’s share of the water resources.
The treaty effectively granted the North African nation a veto power against any dam project along the Nile River in upper riparian countries.
Sudan however, has expressed support to Ethiopia’s dam project putting it at odds with Cairo.

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi wary of Ethiopia threat

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi says he will not underestimate Ethiopia when the sides meet in their 2014 World Cup play-off next month.
Ethiopia are the lowest-ranked side in the final round on the road to Brazil.
But Keshi told BBC Sport: "They didn't get to this stage by mistake, that says a lot about Ethiopia as a team.
"Ethiopia have an unpredictable style which makes it difficult for any opponent. We are going to play both legs like a cup final."

We have to fight hard to get the ticket to Brazil, it won't be easy
Stephen KeshiNigeria coach
The sides last met in a Africa Cup of Nations group game in Rustenburg in January, which the Super Eagles won 2-0 on their way to being crowned champions.
However, Keshi does not think that result will have any bearing come October as he tries to steer Nigeria to their fifth World Cup finals
"You don't talk about the past when it comes to African football, January is a long time ago," explained Keshi, who played at the 1994 World Cup.
"They almost stopped us from progressing to the quarter-final stage, so you cannot underrate them.
"In African football we don't have underdogs. They have the same opportunity to play at the World Cup so we are both starting on a clean slate.
"We have to fight hard to get the ticket to Brazil, it won't be easy and my players clearly understand that."
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced the date for the sides' return leg but the venue has yet to be decided.
The Super Eagles have played all their games in Calabar since 2012, but the refurbished Abuja National Stadium is also ready to host the game.
"A venue has not been decided, but the return leg game will take place on Saturday, 16 November 1600 local time," NFF spokesman Ademola Olajire told BBC Sport.
"The NFF will announce a venue before Friday deadline."
