Talks between Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia to tackle seven main issues

The Blue Nile River in Guba, Ethiopia, during its diversion ceremony in May 2013

Sudanese sources said on Saturday seven main issues will be tackled in the eastern Nile countries’ technical experts meetings that will start on Sunday in Khartoum.
An agreement will be signed to guarantee approach between points of view on the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam project. Parties will consider mechanisms of the dam’s administration and operation as well as economic, social and environmental impacts.
The meeting will discuss agreement on financing the dam and timeline to implement recommendations of the international committee which evaluates the dam, the sources added. The Sudanese government is trying to overcome the current impasse of conflicts between Egypt and Ethiopia.
Parties will also consider resuming studies on the dam's safety, according to sources, which added that the Sudanese government is trying to reassure citizens in al-Qadarif state, located on the Ethiopian-Sudanese border, after the Ethiopian side offered practical vows over these studies.
Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir instructed ministries taking part in meetings of the technical experts or the ministries to work on success of the negotiations, especially that Khartoum is the sponsor to approach points of view between Cairo and Addis Ababa, the sources added.
On Monday, a meeting will be held among the three countries’ water ministers to agree on future of cooperation between them and mechanisms of implementing the recommendations
Meanwhile, the sources accused unnamed foreign parties of creating division between Egypt and Sudan. They considered that the meeting between the three countries' water ministers will push relations forward during the coming period and encourage both Egyptian and Sudanese governments to open the common land road to increase rates of trade between Cairo and Khartoum.
However, Sudanese experts and observers assured that Khartoum seeks resumption of talks following disputes that took place in the earlier meeting on 4 November. Agreement between the three countries’ ministers to resume the meeting in Khartoum confirms that Sudan is keen on success of the negotiations to find a solution for the impasse and achieve comprehensive compromise between the Nile Basin countries that guarantees full administration of the Nile water resources. This also expresses interest in carrying out joint projects to link electricity between the basin countries and then export electricity to European Union countries via Egypt.

Oromo Studies Association 2014 Mid-Year Conference Call for Papers

Oromo Studies Association 2014 Mid-Year Conference Call for Papers

Theme: Communicating Oromo Issues Effectively: The Role of Media, Organizations and Elites
The Executive Committee and Board of Directors of the Oromo Studies Association (OSA) have unanimously chosen Chicago to host the 2014 Mid-Year Conference of OSA. The Conference is going to take place on March 29th and 30th of 2014 at Weiss Memorial Hospital, 4646 N. Marine Drive, Chicago, IL 60640. OSA organizes the conference in collaboration with the youth wing of the Oromo Community of the Greater Chicago. Chicago is home to a small, but remarkably cohesive and vibrant community for over two decades.
The conference theme, “Communicating Oromo Issues Effectively: The Role of Media, Organizations and Elites,” is meticulously chosen to reflect the socio-political dynamics of the Oromo people at home and in the Diaspora. OSA anticipates a large turnout from the Oromo in Chicago, its surroundings, neighboring states, and the growing vibrant young activists all over the Unites States. Likewise, we expect to attract a large crowd of the Oromo intellectuals and activists who will give us their perspective on challenges facing the Oromo nation and the way forward.
We would like to allocate a sufficient time to the presenters, who submit well researched and timely papers, to enhance effective communication of their ideas and engage the conference participants through a constructive discussion. Therefore, this time, we decided to expand the duration of the mid-year conference from the traditional one day meeting to two-day meeting.
We encourage OSA members to propose panels on topics relevant to Oromo Studies. Prospective discussants are required to submit their arguments and main discussion points in writing to the President. Such panels will be entertained if and only if the proposed panelists submit by the deadline, January 28, 2014, two months before the conference. Any paper or topic submitted for presentation after this deadline may not be entertained by the Executive Committee.
The following are the panels envisaged for the mid-year conference in line with the conference theme.
  1. Establishing Pan-Oromo Media: Reflecting on the Past & Going Forward
  2. Curbing Inter- and Intra-ethnic Conflicts: The Role of Civic Organizations and Elites
